Australian Fair Trade; Ingredients
Discussions with the London-based ISEAL Alliance (a global
association for social and environmental standards systems), the Fair
Labelling Organisation (Bonn, Australia and New Zealand) and the
World Fair Trade Organisation (Australia) culminated in a meeting
in Broome in northwestern Australia with Aboriginal communities.
;e principal objective of the meeting, to explore if fair trade can
be applied in a ;rst world country, was achieved, according to a
February 4, 2010, press release from Cosmetochem International
AG (a producer of plant extracts for the beauty industry), and a
study has been undertaken to determine how this certi;cation may
be developed to suit the unique conditions of Australian Aboriginal
culture and practices.
;e meeting also highlighted two native Australian foods with
ingredient potential for the beauty industry—Kakadu plum and
desert raisin (bush tomato).
Kakadu plum, according to wholesale supplier Wild
Harvest NT, is the “single natural food source with the
highest vitamin C content on the planet. It contains
3000mg of vitamin C per 100g of fruit. Further, the fruit is
said to be rich in antioxidants and bioactives.
Desert raisin (also known as kutjera) is a species of
wild tomato, and has been a staple food of the indigenous
Australians for thousands of years, according to the
Outback Pride Project, a promoter of Australian native
food. ;e fruit is a rich source of minerals, particularly
potassium, and high in vitamin C.
Whatever the actual bene;ts, it will be interesting to see
if these fruits make the same impact on the beauty industry
as a number of Brazilian fruits have in the past few years.
