Shiseido has developed a beta Japan-only skin care system, Optune, that
couples digital technology with the company’s cutting-edge skin science and
beauty research. The technology will be rolled out to more markets following
a trial period, the company reports. Optune uses a specialized device and
algorithms to determine skin care needs in real-time (see diagram).
This is reportedly achieved by connecting skin data, including condition and
mood, which is subsequently downloaded onto a smart phone (iPhone) and
paired with environmental/weather data. These data points are then sent to a
special machine, which generates a tailored serum and moisturizer that best
suits the user’s present skin condition.
The dedicated app can build a record of the consumer’s skin conditions and
changes in environmental factors over time for on-demand review, adding a
diagnostic aspect to the consumer experience.
